Wallasey Festival - Report by NGC

Congratulations to Dave Gilmore (Magazine BC) who emerged victorious in tonight’s Wallasey Festival Handicap, after a superb final against Matt Gilmore (Queens Royal); winning 21-18. It was an evening of close battles for Dave, also taking a win in the semi-final 21-18 against Josh Eastwood and beating Peter Wilson 21-17 in the quarters. Matt Gilmore secured his place in the final with wins against Michael Coupe in the semi-final and James Fitzpatrick in the quarters.
We had a good crowd of supporters tonight at Manor Road BC, thank you everyone who turned up and to the club for hosting us. This was our final individual competition for 2024; I hope you’ve enjoyed the coverage and thank you to Custom Floors for their sponsorship.

Tony Vyskocil Memorial Trophy

Well done to James Fitzpatrick from West Kirby Vics who beat Owen Turner of New Brighton Quarry Vikings 21-19 in the final of the Tony Vyskocil Memorial Trophy.

James led 15-08 in the final playing really well for Owen to scramble back to 19 across in a great final. James just hung in to win deservedly to take the trophy for the first time

Thanks to New Brighton Cricket Club for their facilities and to all those who helped out on the day.

 Peter Dodd Federation Merit

Congratulations to Chris Barton, the new winner of the Wallasey Federation Merit, this year named in memory of Peter Dodd, marking his dedicated work for Wallasey Association. What a brilliant final, Chris just edging over the winner’s line 21-20 against Matt Gilmore after a truly exciting game. Well done both for their excellent performances.

Thanks to those who came to watch and to mark a card. We really do need more people to support these competitions to keep them going so you are appreciated. Thanks to Wayne McDermott who kindly donated a trophy to present to the winner whilst we wait for a new one dedicated to Peter and also to Paul Saville’s Custom Floors for their support as always. New sponsors are always welcome to attract more players into our tournaments. Thanks also to the Magazine club for hosting the finals night and also to Manor Road and Upton VH for hosting the qualifiers.

Special thanks to Nicola Gilmore-Coupe for organising both this event and all the Wallasey Association Individual events.

Hampson Shield

For the first time since 2018, The Hampson Shield was played on Thursday  across the two greens at New Brighton Cricket Club. We were treated to some amazing games and what an impressive winner we had in Andy Openshaw (New Brighton Quarry Vikings). 🏆 A definite future bowling champion. Well done Andy 👏🏻 and congratulations also to Lynne Dowling (Magazine Hotel) who also played excellent all night to be a worthy runner-up. All four semi finalists were from different clubs, reflecting the array of talent on show. Well done to all, particular mention to Callum Boyle, a rising 14-year old star who bowled great and shows lots of promise. Well done players 👏🏻

 Sheppick Cup Final

The final of the 2024 Sheppick Cup took place at New Brighton Cricket & Bowling Club tonight with Harrison Park winning by 33 shots.

Wallasey Merit - Information Courtesy of Nicola Gilmore-Coupe

Congratulations to Matt Gilmore for retaining the Winner’s title, having also won it in 2023. Well done also to Michael Coupe who was runner-up.  Both Matt and Michael came through close semi-finals, Matt beating Chris Barton 15 and Michael taking out James Fitzpatrick 19. Well done to all of the last 8 for their achievements and for braving the elements, battling through a heavy downpour. Thanks to the spectators for supporting the competition and those who helped Nicola with marking and measuring in the cold!

Wallasey Vet's Merit - Report by Nicola Gilmore-Coupe

Congratulations to Dave Wilson who today won the Wallasey Vets’ Merit, beating Ray Woods in the final. Well done to semi-finalists Dave Gilmore and Les Henderson, there were some closely fought games all day in really hot weather and a very high standard of play. The green was superb and thanks go to the Magazine Hotel for kindly hosting us and providing tea and coffee, as well as helping me with measuring and marking. 🏆

Tom Bassnett Pairs/Wallasey Vets Merit - Report by Nicola Gilmore-Coupe

Thanks so much to everyone who supported today’s Wallasey Association competition the Tom Bassnett Pairs which took place on an immaculate Upton green. The winners were Dave Gilmore and Michael Coupe, who beat Wayne McDermott and Jay Dermott 21-09 in the final. Both pairs performed consistently well all day, beating other really strong duos, both getting through nail-biting semi finals, Dave & Michael beating Chris Barton & Josh Bunting 21-20 and Wayne & Jay taking out Les Henderson & Dave Wilson 21-19. It was a tiring & busy day so thanks to those who helped me mark some cards and joined in measuring with me. Thanks to John Sherlock for use of Upton’s green and Custom Floors for their donation to the prize money. Congratulations Dave & Michael and well done Wayne & Jay 🎉
